What is an electric iron thermostat?

The electric iron thermostat is a bimetallic adjustable temperature control switch.
The thermostat is an essential part of the electric iron that is used to control the temperature of the iron. We provide all kinds of thermostat for different models of electric iron with both Teflon wire and SS connection and these can also be manufactured according to your heat temperature requirements and other specifications.
Basically, a clothes electric iron boils down to two items. A heating element and a thermostat. Let's first see how a mechanical thermostat works.

The thermostat is a component that is fixed to the metal base of the iron to receive heat. When the iron is cold or off, the metal at the base of the thermostat does not expand and then the contacts close, so the passage of electric current occurs, which activates the heating resistance.

When the electric iron reaches a certain temperature, then the metal at the base of the thermostat undergoes thermal expansion and ends up pushing the contacts to open them, thus turning off the heating resistance.

When we put the iron in the socket, it is cold and therefore the contact closes, the resistance begins to heat up. As the iron heats up, the metal at the base of the thermostat expands and shuts off the resistance. This cycle is repeated whenever the iron loses heat, simply because it is on or giving heat to the clothes.

The thermostat serves as a kind of switch for the heating element. The thermostat turns the heating element on when the iron is cold and turns it off when it is hot.

Then the electric current begins to flow through an iron resistor and the resistor heats up. This is the famous Joule effect:

The Joule effect is a phenomenon that consists of converting electrical energy into heat. This phenomenon occurs when an electrical current passes through a body. Collisions between atoms and electrons within the resistive material produce energy which is converted into heat basically explaining.

The longer the resistor stays on, up to a point, the more the iron heats up. So if the house stays on for a few seconds, it will heat up less than if it stays on for several minutes. In this way the thermostat can control the temperature of the iron.

The upper key of the iron presses the thermostat and the more positioned to the maximum, the less pressure is transferred to the spring that acts on the contacts. In this way, it is very easy to turn on when there is a drop in temperature and with this, the iron remains on for longer, increasing its temperature.

When the temperature switch is at least the opposite occurs. The pressure is higher on the contacts and then it becomes more difficult to connect the resistor. When the iron is in the off position, then the spring is under so much pressure that it disconnects the circuit. There is a shaft that connects the switch that we actuate directly to the thermostat.

A steam iron has only one small difference: there is a place to store the water that comes out in the form of steam when a button is pressed.
