Electrical safety incidents caused by thermal protectors and thermostats should not be underestimated

Electrical safety event heat protection protector should not be underestimated. Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a world-renowned safety testing and standards development body, conducts a series of safety demonstrations of household appliances in its laboratory in Suzhou. The purpose is to remind the general public that they need to keep an eye on home safety. Do not accidentally occur when using home appliances because of neglect of details.

UL Certification thermal protectors and thermostats
Household appliances are an indispensable part of our lives, making our lives convenient and simple. However, we often overlook these things and there may be some security concerns. If the power line protection layer is broken, causing leakage; Long-term overload of the electrical appliance causes internal insulation aging, resulting in short circuit; When the household vacuum cleaner is used, the air inlet is blocked by a carpet, a towel, etc., and smoke, fire, and the like occur. These seemingly minor problems, which are not circumvented, are the family disaster.

The product safety performance demonstration conducted at the UL Safety Laboratory in Suzhou is a product that UL has experienced in numerous and accurate product tests and has been specially designed through data analysis. It simulates the actual situation in real life, and performs different performance comparisons based on different products, aiming to recognize the possible hazards from the demonstration. The reporter saw at the scene that the household appliances used for demonstration include microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, electric fans, etc., which are appliances that are often used in daily life. The demonstration of safety performance mainly reproduces what kind of problems these electrical appliances will cause and what the consequences will be caused by improper use.

In a demonstration experiment in a microwave oven, the worker placed the heated potatoes in a microwave oven in which the thermal protector failed to continue heating. It can be seen that with the thermal protector stopped working, continuous energization causes the microwave oven to heat up quickly. The potatoes burst into sparks in just a few minutes and quickly caught fire, and the flames shone out of the microwave oven, causing other flammable materials around them to burn. In real life, people often use microwave ovens to heat food for a long time. As everyone knows, such behavior can easily cause the microwave oven to overheat. If the thermal protector ages or fails, it may cause the food in the microwave oven to burn. If you don't pay attention, put flammable items such as rags, heat-resistant gloves or multi-purpose paper rags on the microwave oven, it is even more dangerous, and even serious fires may occur. Therefore, we should pay attention to the use time of the microwave oven, and arrange the location of the kitchen debris to keep them away from the heat-producing appliances.

The small experiment of the vacuum cleaner is more intuitive. Normally used vacuum cleaners are blocked by air inlets such as towels and carpets. In less than 10 minutes, the vacuum cleaner emits smoke! Do we have the same experience: When you are vacuuming, you are separated by other chores, and keep the vacuum cleaner running alongside? From now on, you need to change this habit. When leaving the vacuum cleaner, it is necessary to close the power supply in time to save electricity and add a protection network for home safety.

For demonstration experiments with electric fans and heaters, UL uses a shaking head test to illustrate possible hazards. When a high voltage is applied to an electric fan or a heater that has completed 750,000 shakes, it is easy for UL to find out if the motor is leaking. In fact, many fire accidents originate from the breakage of a small wire insulation layer. Regular inspections and timely replacement of appliances that are about to expire are an effective way to avoid such incidents.

In addition to the demonstrations, the reporter also found some special experiments in the lab. For example, teapots that are often used at home. UL reminds that in actual use, people often ignore that the handle of the teapot may suddenly break for various reasons, causing damage to the user. Therefore, UL specifically tests the handle strength. It is not difficult to see that the testing of these consumer products is developed by UL in a large number of practices through the understanding of potential dangers.

“Electrical safety incidents are usually caused by negligence. There are many small details in life that allow us to avoid such safety issues. The key is to cultivate our attention and attention,” UL Lab staff told us.
The odds of harm can be reduced from some of the simpler methods described below, including:

1. When purchasing household appliances, be sure to purchase products that meet the national standards and have been certified by an authoritative certification body. Don't choose inferior appliances for the sake of greed.

2. Operate and use the appliance correctly in strict accordance with the instructions in the product manual.
3. Regularly check the appearance of household appliances, including wires, interfaces, etc., to prevent cracking of the insulation layer or cracking of the plastic casing.
4. Do not place energized wires or patch panels under the carpet or on the surface of any heating element.
5. Keep home appliances away from dust, fumes and heat. These can cause a short circuit in the motor and cause a hazard.
6. Minimize the chance of using several high-current appliances at the same time in the home.
7. When not using household appliances, unplug the appliances and do not leave them energized.
8. Avoid contact with water in household appliances. Water can easily leak electrical appliances.
9. Don't fix the problematic appliance yourself and find a professional to repair it.
10. Pay attention to the service life of home appliances, and promptly replace home appliances that are expiring or have expired.
11. Pay attention to the product description. Do not use the corresponding electrical products in an environment prohibited by the manufacturer to avoid the risk of product safety caused by special harsh conditions of the environment.
